Guinguette Parc du Cinquantenaire - Bar Maurice
Parc du Cinquantenaire, 1000 Brussels, Belgium
Allons, enfants de la FRITERIE!
With the French and Belgian national holidays ahead, we’re preparing for a REVOLUTION! In France, democracy emerged on the barricades. In Belgium, democracy started…in parks!
History lesson: In 1830, non-Belgian exiles fought in Parc Royale for Belgian independence and got to vote in the 1st National Congress that passed Europe’s most liberal constitution. In 1893, Belgians marched on Parc du Forest to demand universal suffrage, but that took a while in Belgium...for the working class, for women, for young people and for EU citizens. And even today, Brussels has one of the largest democratic deficits in the EU.
So on 12 July, the European Quartier is going to make some revolutionary plans! We’re conspiring together in Parc Cinquantenaire—built for Belgium’s 50th birthday—on how to create a real Capital for Europe out of the Brussels Capital Region—ahead of its 30th birthday next year. How concretely can we improve democracy in Brussels? And how can this involvement in Brussels democracy improve our own work and goals for the EU project?
We’ll plot and scheme about the WHYs & HOWs to sign up to vote with VoteBrussels for the #communales2018
, sign the 1bru1Vote petition for the #regionales2019
& sign up with local citizens’ initiatives to lead, advise & volunteer with them.
Teaming up with the regular #EUTweetUp
, the VoteBrussels & 1bru1Vote campaigns are inviting their volunteers to thank them for launching voter registration and citizens’ initiatives in nearly all 19 Brussels communes.
You’re welcome to come in revolutionary fashion, dressed for the barricades of the 18th, 19th or 21st century!
